Depiction of man-animal friendship in How to Train Your Dragon

There’s much that kids as well as adults love about DreamWorks’ hit animation film How to Train Your Dragon. From its interesting storyline to its mesmerizing visuals and animation, the film boasted of many pros. Of the many positive factors, one that struck an instant chord with the audience was the touching and sensitive portrayal of a deep friendship tht blossoms between a dragon and a Viking.

Toothless the Night Fury dragon, is the first character from the movie How to Train Your Dragon that Hiccup befriends. Son of Viking chief Stoick, Hiccup is determined to prove himself as an able dragon hunter. He hunts down Toothless and the fearful dragon loses a tailfin as he falls to the ground in a clearing a little far away. When Hiccup reaches him, he is surprised to find Toothless frightened of him and cannot bring himself to finally kill the mighty beast. Overcoming the initial lack of trust and friendship between them, Hiccup realizes Toothless is actually a loving dragon. Slowly but surely, a strong everlasting bond is forged between the two.

Hiccup and Toothless Strike a Friendship

As the movie progresses, we see how Hiccup starts work on a prosthetic tailfin for Toothless. Hiccup makes one tailfin after another to suit the dragon perfectly, and unknowingly he also builds upon their friendship with his efforts. Hiccup discovers a new Toothless with each passing day and starts gaining sufficient knowledge on dragons from him. The young Viking boy soon realizes that he loves the company of his new found friend more than that of anybody else, even his peers in the Viking village. By the time they do their first real test flight, Hiccup and Toothless are mostly in sync, much to their amazement. To celebrate the success of their first in-sync flight, Toothless and Hiccup go fishing. The events and incident that ensue make Hiccup realize that the dragon lot is not so harmful after all, and certainly not indomitable!

Man and Animal Friendship Reaches its Culmination

Towards the end of How to Train Your Dragon, Toothless’ dragon ties come back to haunt him. Hiccup, Astrid and Toothless discover the dreaded dragon, Red Death, in its cove and they soon realize that the dragons used to hunt down their village only to procure food for this all-consuming lethal dragon. In an unfortunate turn of events, Hiccup is captured by the Vikings and chained. However, he is soon released after the cloud of misunderstanding is cleared and we witness a remarkable journey that Hiccup takes on, with Toothless by his side, to defeat Red Fury.

The Bond of Friendship in How to Train Your Dragon

How to Train Your Dragon highlights how Toothless leaves no stone unturned to assist and save his human friend from danger. Their understanding of each other’s likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses make them allies that together are a force to reckon with. Their true friendship saves the day and changes the way Vikings view and treat dragons in the isle of Berk.
